well, i feel that i should say something about this case. but be warned, you may not like how i think about this. ok, i disagree with him receiving the death penalty- but only becoz i disagree with the death penalty. i think that he committed a crime, and that that was the sentence. more than that- the judge didnt have a choice. if you are found with more than 15g of heroin in singapore the death penalty is mandatory- this guy had 500g!!! it doesnt matter that he has shown remorse, or that he helped the police, it is a mandatory sentence. so i am unable to fault the legal arguments. as for the clemency appeals- im going to sound like a cold, hard-hearted bitch here, but the government couldnt afford to do that. if they are seen to take a soft line on drugs, then they will be screwed. especially given the media attention given to this case. if a clemency appeal had been lodged earlier in the proceedings- before ppl had heard about it- then maybe it could have been considered, but the government can not, under any circumstances, be seen to bow to pressure in a case such as this. maybe it will serve as a wake up call to other aussies- dont freakin smuggle em in countries with the death penalty. i mean, schapelle corby got away with her life, and michelle leslie got off with only three months in jail. it doesnt send the right message to kids who are thinking of doing something this absolutely beyond stupid, does it? like i said- i oppose the death of van nguyen- but only becoz i oppose the death penalty. i think that cries that more could or should have been done are ignoring the facts of the case. and im really not looking forwards to the ensueing media frenzy now that he has been hung...
